This ballot initiative being pushed by the oil and gas industry is designed to cut off Mainers access to affordable, cleaner energy permanently. It will roll back benefits from broadband to Maine based jobs that Maine families are counting on. And will give more power to legislators to oversee/control future investments in the state.

THE COST TO MAINE
- About 1,600 Mainers will lose their jobs – these are jobs that pay, on average, over $40,000 per year.
- The CEC is already creating thousands of permanent jobs that keep our families close to home 1,000 – 3,500 jobs during construction – with an average annual pay around $46,000 annually, and about 300 jobs post-construction. Real Mainers are able to work and live and raise their kids here at home.
- Small businesses took a big hit during the COVID-19 pandemic – Maine can’t afford this special interest initiative that will kill local jobs and hurt our economy in the middle of an economic recovery.
- Maine’s energy costs are among the highest in the country.
- The Maine Department of Public Utilities found that this project will lower electric bills in Maine because low-cost hydropower will back down expensive electricity from natural gas and nuclear power plants throughout the New England grid.
- The DPU estimates that electricity costs will be reduced by between $33-63 million per year, and this does not even count the $140 million rate relief fund that the project is obligated to pay to Maine.
- Maine businesses, especially paper mills, are reliant on new, modern processes that require more electricity. If question 1 passes, Maine will miss out on the affordable and reliable power that will keep our mills open and jobs right here in Maine.
- Maine has an opportunity to be on the forefront of clean energy – don’t let polluters and special interests block what’s good for Maine.
Clean energy is the future. The CEC will cut 3.6 million tons of dirty emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 700,000 cars off the road every year. But if the project is killed, Maine’s air will continue to be polluted by dirty emissions.
- Question 1 removes Maine and New England’s opportunity to expand, with minimal impact, the infrastructure needed to build a long-term cleaner energy solution – so that we can offer wind, solar and hydro as options – thus decreasing cost and potentially offering an export opportunity to the region.
- Maine has an aging electric grid that is going to need an upgrade in order to connect to clean wind, solar, and hydropower facilities, withstand the threats of climate change, and provide reliable and affordable power.
- Question 1, if passed, will throw a giant roadblock in the path of modernizing our electric grid, and put politicians in charge of making these decisions.
- And the special interests who have outsized influence at the statehouse will take advantage of this by blocking any change that harms their bottom line.
